Using Geovision DVR cards for Video Surveillance

As you all probably know, closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to monitor areas that need security. Typically CCTV cameras are typically employed in areas where maintaining a high level of security is essential or where an area is often the location of anti-social behaviour.

In the computer age, it’s becoming increasingly common to use PC-based systems for digitally recording the CCTV video footage rather than using the old analogue VCR. The advantages for digitally recording video footage are numerous, and include:

Archiving to writable DVDs takes up far less physical space than the VHS video counter-parts, and so you can store archives in much less space. For banking establishments, this is a significant issue.
Digital video footage is easily catalogued with any decent software, therefore retrieving footage at a later date is considerably quicker than fast-forwarding a VHS tape!
Computer files do not degrade with age, but VHS tapes degrade in as little as 5 years. This means video footage on a VHS tape will become noisy over time, losing detail from the footage.

Geovision Digital Video Recorder (DVR) cards are ranked in the top tier for computer-based CCTV surveillance. This means the video footage is compressed into the smallest space possible, but the actual compression is achieved by the DVR card, leaving your PC to process other things instead. When you have many CCTV cameras, then compression will save you a few pennies when you have to buy hard drive storage.

Geovision GV-1120 DVR cards and the Geovision GV-800 DVR cards are the little brothers of the previously mentioned cards. They offer slightly less in the recorded frame rate but provide support for just 4 cameras. These versions of the cards are perfect for home installations, since its unlikely you’ll be able to find a location for 16 CCTV cameras!

The Logitech MX518 mouse is a 1600DPI multi button mouse designed to please even the most advanced gamers. One of the first things that grabbed my attention though, was the look of the mouse. When it comes to cases, everyone has heard of the name Raidmax at one point or another. Whether one has been seen at a LAN party or perhaps while building a new PC online, the name has come up at one time or another. Founded in 2000, its headquarters is currently located in California. Raidmax manufactures a range of products, not only computer cases, but CPU coolers and power supplies as well. Raidmax's goal is to consistently offer the best in class PC enclosures and accessories. There has only been one other Raidmax product reviewed on this site, and it was at the beginning of this year. The Raidmax Windstorm earned a fairly good review and I'm anxious to see if Raidmax can prove itself again. The product under the spotlight in this review is the Raidmax Skyline case. It offers a lot of the same features as a lot of other cases today, such as included top and rear exhaust fans and mesh front drive covers. Manufacturers seem to be paying much more attention to airflow today, as they should. As computer power increases, usually the heat they produce does also. Meeting the Mede8er Multimedia Monster

There are a few media players on the market but to date I have not even considered getting my hand on one of them. Mvix did in the later models support Full HD content which was the first product I looked at. However it only had HDMI 1.0 support which means no sound through HDMI, so I was still not sold. I am pleased to say that I have found a media player worth looking at. This nifty device is called the Mede8er MED500X.

Sparkle has teamed up with nVidia to produce the Sparkle GTX260 Core 216, a graphics card that stands as a direct challenger to AMD's Radeon 4870 graphics card.

The "Core 216" part of the Sparkle GTX260 Core 216 videocard's name refers to the GPU having additional shader processors enabled. While the original Geforce 260 GTX had 192 shader processors, the Core 216 variant has an additional 24 enabled, for a grand total of, you guessed it, 216 shader processors. That means this PCI Express 2.0 x16 videocard has a little more raw computing power than the original Geforce GTX 260 did. Mvix Unveils the MvixPVR with iPod Docking Support

The device is called the MvixPVR and it essentially combines a PVR, HDD media player, and an iPod dock all into one device. The MvixPVR is capable of outputting 720p/1080i/1080p video with 5.1 Digital Surround Sound, HDMI, 802.11g connectivity, USB host functionality to stream media files from external drives, and can be used as a NAS server / UPnP media server / BitTorrent downloader. Interestingly, the device can record “digitally from any source, your set-top box, satellite receiver or camcorder.” Like other Mvix products, one has to bring their own hard drive to the game for on-board storage. Mivx documentation states that it can support up to a 1TB SATA hard drive (the YouTube video below hints that Mvix may be releasing configurations with an included hard drive). Lastly, the MvixPVR is cross-platform compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux PCs – in case you want to share files with the device via the network or plugged in as an external USB drive.

As with televisions, design-wars will now be fought over monitors as well. And here's the proof. The AOC 913Fw is a 19-inch LCD monitor that'll surely spice up your desktop.

The AOC 91Fw isn't one of those run-of-the-mill monitors that you get in the market. This has a full black piano finish front that makes it look more stylish than anything else that you'd keep on your table. It has a spiral stand that fits at the back. You can twist the ends of the stand to adjust the angle for the panel.

The OSD buttons are placed at the bottom right corner under the panel; hidden from plain view but are easy to reach and use nonetheless.

“fake” cover, which is great: your optical drive will be installed behind this masks

Not quite the typical “portable media center” normally you see, but
more of a compact version of the Mvix MX-780HD. This condensed
media player handles all the same codecs of the larger 780 including
MPEG 1-4, XviD/DivX, and my favorite DVD ISOs (with 1080i upscaling).

The small unit houses a 2.5” hard drive and sports component outs for
HD video along with digital optical out for 5.1 audio. If you would like to
